This performative intervention and interactive short movie screening was conceptualised and performed by Ástbjörg Rut Jónsdóttir, Hjördís Anna Haraldsdóttir and Aimée Xenou at the Gallery of Sim in Reykjavik in March 2011.

Your icelandic – a continuum plays with spoken Icelandic, Icelandic Sign Language, and spoken German and English. In an interactive manner, with the audience we explored and experimented with the limitations and potential of language and its use. This project brought together hearing impaired, deaf, and hearing actors in a performance that plays with notions of exclusion and inclusion through language. This event included the screening of Aimée’s movie “your icelandic” and a reception to encourage a discussion about a legal bill that would frame Icelandic sign language as a first language of the deaf in this country, which had been proposed and was pending decision by the Icelandic Parliament at the time of the event.
