The performance ‘sugar fields’ was created for the ‘true stories untold’ event in May 2010. In this participatory performance, Aimée sets up a field made of sugar grains in the kitchen of the institute hosting the event and plants sugar circles made of caramelised sugar onto the field. This performance was the kick-off piece for the ‘true stories untold’ event and throughout the day visitors to the show were invited to harvest, eat, or else plant ‘sugar circles’ in the field. A performative connection was created between the product that is bought and consumed on a daily basis and its labour intensive farming and production processes.

This performance belongs to a series of ‘food work’ that plays on the ‘aesthetic’ interrelatedness of taste and vision. At the same time, this series challenges understandings of sugar as simply abundantly available devoid of historical and contemporary contexts of production, use and implications.
